Invitation to Peter's 30th Birthday Concert at Reno Sweeney

Image
This is an invitation to Peter's 30th birthday concert held at his home away from home Reno Sweeney on February 10, 1974. Reno Sweeney was a New York cabaret supper club located at 126 W. 13th Street. The invitation was designed by Eliot Hubbard and illustrated by artist/illustrator Robert W. Richards, who illustrated some of Peter's concert posters. Two hundred were created for the concert. This one is numbered 178/200 and signed with the illustrator's initials 'RWR'. The illustration is very interesting because it's difficult to interpret. It has a Venetian masquerade feel, a touch of French neoclassical/rococo style, with a dash of medievalism. This particular invitation appears to have been glued into a scrapbook. The title on the front of the invitation Ask Me I Been There  refers to Peter's song, Just Ask Me I Been There .   The front of the invitation includes a message Peter wrote at the bottom which reads, "And still going! Love Peter"...

Tap Shoe Charm from The Rockettes

Image
The Rockettes gave this adorable tap shoe charm to Peter. The tap shoe is gold with a diamond in the shoe's strap. It is inscribed "Love Rockettes" on the bottom of the shoe.  The Rockettes loved Peter and Peter loved them. They performed together at Radio City Music Hall, The Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, and toured across the country in the 1980s. Peter was dubbed Radio City Music Hall's Goodwill Ambassador and was the first male to join the Rockettes' famous kickline.     Item: 4.9/2024.BMLW

Jules Jürgensen Watch from Liza Minnelli

Image
This stunning watch was the first watch Liza gave Peter around 1965/66 (possibly later). It's a gold Swiss made Jules Jürgensen watch. It has to be wound up every 24 hours. The watch still works after all these years! For being a man's watch it's quite small. The best thing of all is the message Liza wrote on the back: "In every way everyday I need less of myself I need more him" --L-- The message comes from the Jule Styne/Bob Merrill song, "The Music That Makes Me Dance" from the Broadway version of Funny Girl . Legs Diamond Gold Suit

He then proceeds to sing "Say It Isn't So". He also wore this suit during the curtain call. Inside the shiny and heavy suit, there are two labels inside the coat near both of the shoulder pads inscribed, "Allen Tango Tux".  Watch the gold suit in action from this scene of "Say It Isn't So" from Legs Diamond. Opal Cufflinks

Image
This is a collection of gold and opal cufflinks. I believe the collection consists of one pair of Australian white opals and two pairs of Australian black opals. They have such beautiful colors, tones, and patterns!    Item: 7.9/2024.BMLW

The City of Canberra Cufflinks

Image
This is one of the most interesting and surprising items in Peter's collection. It is a pair of Parliamentary issued cufflinks from the early 1970s. They were presented to members of the Whitlam government. The Whitlam government refers to the Australian federal government led by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam of the Australian Labor Party, from 1972-1975. I have no idea how Peter got these cufflinks since he was never a politician nor was he ever a member of the Whitlam government. Maybe he received them when he was commissioned as Canberra's first ambassador-at-large in 1981, and was given the Keys to Canberra, but the years simply don't match up. Or maybe he received them from his old classmate and friend from Armidale, Senator John Knight who was a diplomat, politician, and served as a Senator for the  Australian Capital Territory from 1975-1981. The gold cufflinks contain the coat of arms of Canberra with the  motto "For the Queen, the Law and the People".  The...

Legs Diamond Stick Pin

Image
Peter wearing the 'Legs' stick pin in his lapel at the opening night of  Legs Diamond  on December 26, 1988. Photo courtesy of Larry R. Peter wearing the 'Legs' stick pin in his lapel at the opening night of Legs Diamond on December 26, 1988. The cast of the musical  Legs Diamond  received 'Legs' diamond stick pins on opening night (December 26, 1988). The stickpins Peter received were smaller in design than the other cast members. I don't know which company made it, but it could have been made by Diamond Essence who handed out 1,200 diamond solitaire stickpins to every member of the opening night audience.     Item: 10.9/2024.BMLW

Dressing Room Door Pin

Image
This is a silver and gold pin of a dressing room door with Peter's initials 'P.W.A.' (Peter Woolnough Allen) engraved on it complete with a gold star. The back of the pin contains a lovely description which reminds me of Peter's song "Back Doors Crying". The back of the pin is inscribed: "Funny How You Just Knocked On My Door". I have no idea who gave this pin to Peter, but he loved it. Item: 11.9/2024.BMLW

Radio City Music Hall Pin

Image
A metal pin from Radio City Music Hall. Peter performed a series of concerts with The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall four separate times in 1981, 1982, and 1986.     Item: 12.9/2024.BMLW

Maracas!

Image
Peter owned many maracas. This particular wooden pair has a fun, vibrant motif with neon yellow grip tape around the handles so he could hold them better while performing. I don't know what year they are from .       Item: 13.9/2024.BMLW

Legs Diamond Book & Demo Tape

Image
Legs Diamond went through many rewrites from its beginning in 1984 to its previews in 1988. This early revised book was written by Irvin Bauer and Charles Suppon, and dated November 12, 1985. The book contains illustrations by Charles Suppon. Harvey Fierstein took over rewriting the book in 1987. Legs Diamond played at the Mark Hellinger Theatre from December 26, 1988 - February 19, 1989. The book was accompanied with an unreleased 13-song cassette tape demo Peter did for Legs Diamond around 1984 or 1985. It features Peter, his backup singers Nikki Gregoroff and Dian Sorel, and a duet with his bass player Mark Berger. View the book while listening to one of the demo songs, "Gentlemen Out On A Spree". Listen to the FULL Legs Diamond demo here! Item: 1.2022.WF
